The Prosperity Gospel and the Judgment of God

The greatest lie of our generation is the prosperity Gospel.  It teaches that if we are faithful to God, then he promises to make us healthy and wealthy.  The video below and my previous post about Joel Osteen does a good job of explaining why I hate the prosperity Gospel.

But this post is not simply about the lie of the prosperity gospel.  This post is about where this movement came from and why it is thriving.  I believe that the prosperity gospel is not simply some theology that people adhere to.  This “gospel” is the judgment of God to people who desire things more than they desire God.  In Romans 1, we see God giving people over to the sinful passions of their heart because of their continual rebellion against him.  The prosperity gospel offers the same gifts that Satan tempted Jesus with in the desert: health and wealth.  That is the passion of the heart’s of those who adhere to this gospel, and that is what God is giving them over to:

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. – 2 Tim 4:3-4

That is why this movement is thriving.  God is giving them exactly what they desire in their sin. Teachers of their own choosing are tickling their ears with lies that promise to give them what they desire most.  Perhaps this is why we are seeing so few converts out of this movement.

Here’s my challenge:  Pray for those who are being deceived by the prosperity gospel.   Be thankful for the true Gospel which tells us we can be satisfied in Christ alone apart from any life circumstance.  And be burdened to share the true Gospel with those trapped in this lie.

Pride Check

God often uses his word to give me a pride check. My mind is often focused on what should be doing with our budget or how can be growing our youth ministry or how can make an impact in people’s lives. I make plans in my mind on so many areas of life and visualize exactly how I want things so much so that I lose sight of the end goal of everything in life: to know Christ. I am so thankful that God’s word is able to reel me back in and keep me grounded – to give me a pride check right when I need it. Today I read these words from the book of Isaiah:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Is. 55:8-9

God has made his supremacy known throughout the Bible. I am constantly amazed and humbled when I read passages like this that describe a God who is infinitely wiser than I ever could be, a God that is supreme and sovereign over everything, and a God who is loving enough to allow me to pursue to know and experience his goodness. For apart from his grace, I would never seek him and would never get to enjoy the satisfaction that is found by being made alive in him. But through his grace I can now fervently pursue to know him and find joy in his wisdom.

Thank you God for this pride check today.

Thank You President Obama for this Pro-life Message

If Obama actually believes the words that came out of his mouth after the shooting, then he would be fighting against Abortion just as hard as he is working to make our schools safe. (HT: Justin Taylor)
